Estate Sale Two Weeks Ago Just Made Me Gasp - January's Favorite Find

I went to an estate sale two weeks ago.  I have been trying to get pictures to update my blog for the past two weeks I just haven't had time.  Finally, yesterday I had time.

First I will say I tried to get to the sale early in the morning and wait in line but my husband ended up having to work which left me with my three year old son.  I don't mind bringing him to sales every once in a while so, I took him with me once it was already opened so I didn't have to subject him to standing out in the cold.  The place was packed with stuff and with people.  We couldn't move and just ended up leaving because it was too hard to look at anything.  But I decided to come back by myself once my husband came home from work.  I figured since there was so much stuff packed in the house I could find a treasure or two to bring home.  And, it was all half price at that point.  I totally lucked out.

I got several pieces of vintage clothing and some fabric.  The one worker saw that I was buying some fabric and retrieved a bag out of the closet with more fabric in it to look at, which no one had seen yet.  There happened to be two fabulous 1940's dresses in the bag.  I'm sure they would have been priced much higher but since they were not seen when being priced I got them for $2 each!  These I thought would make my January favorite find.

This one, in a sheer rayon fabric, is black with white bows and yellow flowers.

This one is a sheer white with large purple, pink and white flowers, and matching fabric buttons.

All or at least most of the clothing at this sale were hand made by the owner.  I also got a few other dresses, and two piece outfits along with some barkcloth drapes and a large bolt of paisley fabric.  Here are a few pieces, I didn't take pictures of all of them.

Oh but wait!

I also got an adorable 50's party dress layered in green tulle.  This dress reminds me of a fairy ballerina or a big cupcake.  I was actually surprised it was still available at the sale, I definitely couldn't pass it up.  The condition it great too it just needs a bunch of wrinkles steamed out.

Look what tag I discovered while taking pictures.....

My jaw dropped, I can't even believe how lucky I was to find this treasure.  As much as I want to keep this dress I need the money so I will steam out the wrinkles and list it on eBay.

Nice Haul

I picked up a nice haul on Saturday.  I even woke up late and wasn't first in line! (or I should say 4th), but way back in line with maybe 20 people in front of me.  I still ended up with some great vintage dresses, vintage unused pillow cases, barkcloth fabric drapes, vintage fabric and a few other tidbits.  It was a very fun sale and I wish more were like this one.

This dress has nice details on the pockets and collar.

Love the paisley crepe fabric on this one!

Fabulous beaded collar.

Double knit fabric dress.

Green eyelet lace dress!

Three different types of barkcloth fabric.

Floral

Tiki print!

Autumn leaf print

With Drug Room penned on the back of each one.  I laughed at that one at first thinking the old lady who lived there must have had some kind of groovy drug room in the 60's  Then I remembered the ad had mentioned there were old glass pharmaceuticals so she must have either been some kind of doctor or worked for one, and these drapes simply hung in the office where they kept the drugs and not a room filled with trippy lava lamps, neon posters and bean bag chairs.

Awesome satin Hollywood souvenir pillow case!

Sweet groovy fabric

Pretty pink pillow cases

Barkcloth purse

Kitschy red toaster cover

Story of a Rain Drop

Saturday morning had crazy downpours so I didn't stand in line this weekend.  I waited till the sale was already opened.  I may have missed out on some things but I'm pretty happy with my haul.  At the first sale I picked up some vintage Christmas, millinery fruit and some vintage tulle material.

I never find jingle bells with all bells attached so I was pretty happy to find these.

The late husband of the next estate was a teacher and had some neat teaching books from the 50's/early 60's.

Science book with picture words.

Also picked up a great picture book about Chicago from the turn of the century.

Standing in line to pay for these, and a few other things, I was given a tip about a thrift store close by that had some vintage clothing.  So I went off my routed out plan to check it out.  It wasn't as fabulous as I had imagined in my head but well worth the stop.  The ladies working there were super nice and I got a super good deal on a bag full of clothing, aprons, scarves and purses.  I will have to return there for sure.

Just a few pieces.

Last Weekend Sales

I went to two sales last weekend.  The first was on Friday, and it was early and close, so of course I went.  The first things I search for at sales is vintage clothing so I always head to the bedrooms.  I just happened to turn my head and see a closet with clothes in it out of the corner of my eye.  I got a 2 50's vintage dresses, a coat, a suit and a cute Juniorette hat by Mr. John with original hat box and tags.  The upstairs didn't have anything clothing wise except children's and it wasn't anything special.  But I did find some embroidered pillow cases which I have a major weakness for.

White on white embroidery...so pretty

Roosters on a pillow case?  Still cute, yes.

Deep purple cala lilies

And check these out!  I have never seen early movie stars embroidered on pillowcases before.  I love these!  I'm going to have a hard time selling them...maybe I'll keep them.

On Saturday morning I went to a sale that advertised vintage Christmas ornaments which I am collecting for a project of mine.  I got some nice chippy ones with nice patterns.

Then I found a pile of these little boys knickers from the 20's.  I love when I find unexpected items.  I think they should sell well.  I love the old labels on them.

All in all it was a good weekend.  Except for the sale I missed that I planned on going to, but didn't.  I'm still sick about missing it.  I heard there was some good stuff there.  But I can't talk about it anymore, I have to put it out of my mind and move on.
